The mountains between the East Fork and Toklat Rivers, in Denali National Park, are prime habitat for the dall sheep that I was looking for on that fine August day. So discovering this handsome bull caribou halfway up the mountainside was a little unusual. Most likely he had scaled the steep slopes in an effort to avoid the hordes of flies that torment caribou in summer.
This image is one of my personal favorites. I love the soft texture of the antlers, still covered in velvet, with the pastel colors and convergent lines of the mountain ridges that frame them.
