As this pair of trumpeter swans moved closer, I sat perfectly still along the waters edge. The lake's surface, a mirror of the fiery sunset above, rippled with a gold sheen as the swans glided into camera range.
Trumpeter swans are the largest of seven swan species found worldwide. Weighing up to 35 lbs., once paired they remain together for life. Eighty percent of the trumpeter swan population nests in Alaska.
